The Winning Entry:
Swimming with my best friend
By: Nicole
Meia and I were on the sandy beach with our toes in the water. Meia told me a few months ago that she was afraid of snorkeling. I wanted to help her get rid of that fear.
“Race you to the snorkel shack!” I yelled, already running.
I ran as fast as my feet would carry me. I got to the snorkel shack well before Meia got there. I asked the lady for two snorkels. She handed them over the counter right as Meia came up behind me panting. Meia wiped her forehead with her sleeve.
“Why do you have those?” She asked.
“You’re coming snorkeling with me,” I told her.
“But Deglan!” Meia whined.
I marched over to the water and started swimming further out. Meia ran after me but stopped when she felt the warmwater. I bobbed my head above the water and waved my hand in the air at Meia.
“Come on!” I shouted.
She looked nervous. She started to step into the water but then backed up once again.
“I can’t do it…” Meia said.
“I know you can!” I told her. “Watch.”
I plunged under. I looked around with my goggles and I saw a fish caught in a piece of trash. I popped my head out of the water.
“Meia, there’s a poor fish who’s stuck!” I motioned for her to come. “I need your help.”
I pleaded her. She finally got into the water. She started walking towards me.
“Put on your snorkel,” I said.
“Do I have to?” She asked.
“We have to save this fish.”
“Alright,” Meia said taking a deep breath.
She dove under and working together we untangled the fish. We shot out of the water.
“You did it Meia! I knew you could.” I gave her a big hug.
The next thing Meia said surprised me the most.
“Race you to that buoy out there!”
She popped on her goggles and started to swim. I smiled and followed my best friend.
