The Winning Entry:
Swimming with my best friend
By: Nicole

Meia and I were on the sandy beach with our toes in the water. Meia told me a few months ago that she was afraid of snorkeling. I wanted to help her get rid of that fear.

“Race you to the snorkel shack!” I yelled, already running.

I ran as fast as my feet would carry me. I got to the snorkel shack well before Meia got there. I asked the lady for two snorkels. She handed them over the counter right as Meia came up behind me panting. Meia wiped her forehead with her sleeve.

“Why do you have those?” She asked.

“You’re coming snorkeling with me,” I told her.

“But Deglan!” Meia whined.

I marched over to the water and started swimming further out. Meia ran after me but stopped when she felt the warmwater. I bobbed my head above the water and waved my hand in the air at Meia.

“Come on!” I shouted.

She looked nervous. She started to step into the water but then backed up once again.

“I can’t do it…” Meia said.

“I know you can!” I told her. “Watch.”

I plunged under. I looked around with my goggles and I saw a fish caught in a piece of trash. I popped my head out of the water.

“Meia, there’s a poor fish who’s stuck!” I motioned for her to come. “I need your help.”

I pleaded her. She finally got into the water. She started walking towards me.

“Put on your snorkel,” I said.

“Do I have to?” She asked.

“We have to save this fish.”

“Alright,” Meia said taking a deep breath.

She dove under and working together we untangled the fish. We shot out of the water.

“You did it Meia! I knew you could.” I gave her a big hug.

The next thing Meia said surprised me the most.

“Race you to that buoy out there!”

She popped on her goggles and started to swim. I smiled and followed my best friend.

First Finalist:
The Dragon of shadows
By: Micah

I was running hard. A beast chased me, the look it had was of hatred. I tripped and braced myself. As the dragon got closer its green scales glistened against the warmth of the sun. As it closed its jaws around me I heard a voice call out “It is time for the dragon to awaken”. I jumped up I was now awake. I had had the same nightmare for the last week. I looked around still shaking. I quickly got ready for school. As I came down stairs, I saw my brother and sister wrestling on the floor. My mind drifted back and around the dream. “Is something on your mind?“ Mom asked suddenly.

“No” I answered. I didn’t want my mom to think I was crazy, “Why do you ask?”

”Because you normally sleep in on Saturdays,” She replied.

I realized that in my shaking state I thought it was Friday.

“I thought it would be nice to get in a morning jog,” I said quickly. Before she could question me more I ran out the door. The morning was crisp. The wind cut through my jacket. I began to run around the block. I ended up in a dead end. Suddenly, it began to rain. As I turned the corner my nightmares became reality. High in the air two dragons flapped their wings. The largest dragon was the one from in my dream; he was green and had to be at least eight feet tall. The other dragon looked like a cloud of darkness it was slightly smaller than the green one. “Get him,” said the green one.

“Yes, lord Edric,” said the shadow dragon but before it could move, a dragon swept out of the air and tackled the shadow. The dragon’s rider leaped and rolled when she hit the ground. Edric growled at the new comers and darted away. The dragon’s rider was a young girl probably around eleven.

“My name is Meia,” she said. But before I could reply a great growl made me jump. I saw the blue dragon descend from above the cloud line with the black dragon in its claws. It slammed the black dragon into the cement making a seven-foot crater. “Good job Deglan” said Meia. We jumped on Deglan’s back and rode him home. I was shaking; Meia told me that the black dragon was named Shade. To my dismay she told me that Shade was not defeated and would seek revenge. We dismounted Deglan and to my surprise he turned into a human boy. As I entered the house I felt dizzy. They explained that I was part dragon. She told us we would need to go to learn how to defend ourselves against dragons. “Lets go! “ said Mom “Caleb, go get Maddie“. Deglan turned into a dragon again. I was overcome with shock when my mom turned into a dragon. Then we each hopped on a dragon. Meia led the way taking to the skies. I had the sinking feeling that Meia was making it look easy; I was right. Mom shot upward so fast Caleb almost fell off. My heart raced as we gained altitude. Finally, we broke through the cloud line. Then out of nowhere shade attacked us. Mom tried to get away but I lost my balance and fell off. I hit the cold water. I jerked up and looked around I was in my bed; soaking wet. Caleb was standing above me holding an empty water jar everything had been a dream.

Second Finalist:
Life of a Dragon
By:Kylee

Once upon a time there was a dragon named Deglan. He lived in a village named Castroville. It is located in a medieval forest. His friend the garden gnome Arthur was dressed in a red shirt with green pants and a shovel in his hands. He had just finished some work in the garden. Deglan had finished school and he had a couple minutes before dinner. Arthur didn’t like working all day because he wouldn’t have enough time to play. Arthur’s mom didn’t like to let Arthur play she thought if he played too much he would like Deglan better. The only time that Arthur and Deglan are allowed to play is when Arthur’s mom goes to get groceries and that is not for every 2 weeks. When Arthur and Deglan play they usually play hop scotch or they play tag they also play hide and seek it was fun one day as Deglan was walking home he saw a pebble. Not just an ORDINARY pebble a shiny one he picked it up and wished that Arthur would be able to play. He threw it into the water (Splash) it hit the waterfall. When he got home Arthur was waiting for him Arthur Said “ Hello Deglan Where have you been “Then Deglan Said” I have been to the Fruit Market I got you a Apple and a Grape fruit I know how much you like it so I got you the Green one”. “Thanks”. “No Problem”. “Can you play for a little bit”. “Yeah sure”. “My mom is going to be gone for a couple of Hours”.” Where did she go”? “She had to go talk to Lord Fondue”. “Why”? “She wants me to learn Math like 2+2=8 right? “Not Exactly”.”Just go 4 down”. “Ok”. “So 2”. “No”.” What is it is 4”. “Good Luck. The End.

Third Finalist: Dragon Poetry
By: Chibunma

A dragon is a mythical monster like a giant reptile.
It symbolizes chaos
A chaos that is so unpredictable and confusing
A dragon is also a fierce and intimidating person
It causes someone to feel deeply hurt or angry
Why have dragons?
They are dangerous and destructive
Where did dragons come from?
Did they come from people or was it something that god created
We have no idea
Dragons dragons dragons

Thank you again!
